Mechanical Filtration

While in operation the beads inside the bead filter will float into the top half of the body and form a compacted “Static” bed. By pushing pond water through these tightly packed beads any organic particles will be strained out thoroughly. As the beads become blocked the resistance to the pump will increase and the pressure in the unit will also increase which will be shown on the pressure gauge.

Biological Filtration

Bacteria attach themselves to the surface of the beads, forming a thin bio film. The bacteria in the bio film turn ammonia and nitrite into nitrate efficiently. To create a good bio film it is important to only clean the bead filter correctly. Cleaning the bead filter correctly will mean that the organic dirt/waste will be removed leaving the bio film on the beads.

It is important that all beadfilters are installed with the adequate mechanical filtration necessary to remove any larger particles prior to the water entering the unit.
